On 28 September 2018, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 followed by a local tsunami struck Palu, Sulawesi, causing the deaths of over 2,100 people and destroying several houses and buildings completely. On the eleventh of October, the 13th SRCs Charity Department started a   fundraising project to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu.

This was done by not only the Secondary and Primary SRCs in managing the donation booths and food stall every week but also the parents, who had contributed greatly by sponsoring food sold at the stalls. The Grade 12 IB art students were also involved, by coming out with their own project which supported our fundraising efforts. By 2 November, we managed to surpass our fundraising goal, collecting a total of Rp. 50,080,000. All funds will be sent to Palu to aid their relief programme in providing victims with enough money for basic necessities.

Overall, the fundraising project was a huge success and definitely one to learn from. This experience has inspired me to give back to the community by reaching out to and providing for those in need. Not only did we manage to meet our target, but the experience had been extremely memorable for everyone involved, including the students, parents, and staff. The SRC members are all extremely grateful for each and every donation made – no matter how big or small.
