Gr. 12 Humility
When I was 12, I spent my summer in a rural village in East Nusa Tenggara, volunteering as an English teacher in the local primary school by day and as some a local doctors’ assistant by night. Little did I know how much that experience would impact my life. I still recall the conversations I had with the local children, how they had noble dreams.
However, looking at their circumstances, those dreams sounded far-fetched, yet the children had faith and believed in themselves. This inspired me and I began to develop a passion for helping these villagers and their children. After numerous conversations with the locals, I realized that education was the key but unfortunately, it was not affordable for these families.
Being coffee farmers, these villagers and their profits are controlled by the middlemen, so they cannot adjust their own selling prices and they stay poor. The solution was clear to me and I set out to learn from multiple internships at HR and IT companies, intense coding classes both online and face-to-face, and travel to different villages almost every weekend. In October 2016, eTani was created. eTani is a mobile application which bypasses the middlemen, giving farmers the freedom to set their own prices in accordance to the market price, and the exposure to a wider market.
To date, thousands of farmers in eight provinces across the country have benefitted from eTani. Another area of focus I had was to provide access to good healthcare systems for the locals, something which was not widely available. I sought to learn from others and as such I ventured to the United States and joined (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) MIT Launch, an entrepreneurial programme for high school students. Together with two other like-minded students, we founded a medical startup, Revlux, a medical software company which aims to aid radiologists by making the process of reading the results of x-ray scans more effective.
Revlux Health is currently still in the development phase and will be launched next year, pending its success. My passion in pursuing socio-economic justice for Indonesia’s less fortunate has brought me within the government’s and the media’s radar. Just recently, I was chosen by the UKP-PIP (Unit Kerja Presiden untuk Pembinaan Ideologi Pancasila) as their ambassador for the 5th principle of Pancasila. It brings me great honour and joy to see that my work this far has not been in vain and I hope to further expand and pursue this journey of mine. Indeed, there is still much to be done and as one of Indonesia’s most popular sayings go, “Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita runtuh (United we stand, divided we fall),” I cannot do this alone. To bring Indonesia forward, its young generation, my generation, must rise up, and go hand-in-hand to develop this growing nation. And so as my story ends, our story begins.
